Chapter Twelve
âThanks, but no,â I replied curtly. âFool me once, and all that. Iâm sure you understand.â
Cole opened his mouth to speak but never got the chance to follow through as I turned and left through the door. He called after me, which I ignored. I needed space to clear my head and just be away from males overflowing with testosterone and idiocy. Guards followed me through the halls of Kianâs mansion, fingers ready to pull their guns from the holsters at any second if I made a wrong move.
My husband was nowhere to be seen as I sauntered into the entrance hall and headed for the front door. Liam grabbed for my arm, which I was quick to deflect with a burst of light energy to his chest. The wall of a man stumbled backward, falling onto his ass as the others brought their own powers to the surface.
âIâm going outside even if it kills me,â I yelled at them, forming a ball of radiant light in my palm and slamming it onto the floor. The effect was a blinding shine that rang like a hundred train whistles. As soon as the guards had covered their ears and eyes, I rushed outside and down the steps, turning toward the right side yard and running through the grass. Kianâs house was buried in the Colorado wilds, surrounded by forests and mountains. Escape wasnât what I was aiming for, knowing it would do no good this far into the game.
Not only could I not navigate the woods alone, but Kianâs eyes were on me. I couldnât see him, but I felt those amber eyes staring into my soul from somewhere. So much for him being the busy king Iâd always imagined him to be. A chuckle escaped my lips at the thought. A king who had all the time in the world to constantly hunt his estranged wife.
When Iâd reached a point close to the edge of the forest, I stopped to take a breath or two. Chilly wind bit my skin through the thin material of the robe, but I brushed it off and sat down, lying on my back in the plush grass. Bubbling white clouds sailed overhead, looking especially beautiful against the deep blue of the sky. My body wanted to float up into them, to touch the cold fluff and giggle like a child. Oh, simpler days, I smiled at the thought.
Sitting back up, I undid my silk waistband and pushed the robe off my shoulders, calling to my wings and stretching them as far as theyâd go. It wasnât much, but the bath seemed to have helped a little with the wrinkling. I smoothed one with my fingers, and it twitched, feeling like velvet and glass all at once. Drawing forth my healing energy, I pushed a little into the wing. Like a wanderer in a desert, the wing gulped up the magic in seconds, becoming a little more lively with each pull.
âYou like that?â I smiled tenderly, turning to give the other a dose as well.
